I'm going to the Air Force April 8, what is some good advice you can give me.?

My Job is 3-A (information management) so advice on that will be good to. Anything as far as basic, working, and living would help.

Do what your told, keep your head down and learn to deal with the amazing amount of crap you will find. Learn as much as you can, and think of it as a tool to get a great job in real life.

The Air Force deploys just as much as everyone else. If you don't like deploying I suggest go to a fighter base or overseas. Ramstein Germany is nice but pretty busy. Places you don't want to be cause they will deploy you and overwork you are Mcchord, Travis, Dover, Charleston. Good Luck though Air force bases are the nicest.

Find the learning center on base. Take as many courses as you can. They will transfer into college credit through A.C.E.
These courses are free so its free college. Each booklet is a third to half a college credit. Now if there is a real college on Base enroll. The classes may be free or greatly reduced price. Every credit you earn in the military means that your GIBill money will go further (Go for Masters or PHD).

Pick up a second job classification that way you are on a promotion tract for two fields not just one.

When you sign up you get two picks on your contract. (Job, Location, Signing bonus, etc..) Do not use as one of your picks the GIBill. You get that automatically but at the MEPS station they will let you pick it. You have to sign a statement to opt out of the GIBILL. Don't do that. Pick your job code and see if you can get location or a Money Bonus. I would go with money as E-1 to E-4 starting pay is low. Plus it is more likely as a new recruit that you will go over seas on first tour.

Find out what the physical fitness test is for the Air Force. (Sorry I was Army). Make sure you can pass it before you join it will make your life easier during boot and advanced training.

Best advice for basic is don't stand out. Don't be the star or the goof ball. If you make no waves it will go by really fast.

Best advice for first post is forget everything they taught you in basic. The real military isn't like that and follow your SGT's every lead.

----------------------------------------------------

Last advice get two of everything. Have the shaving kit you uses and the one for inspection. Right out of school get at least two more uniforms (BDU) that you don't touch. Leave them clean and pressed in your locker for inspection. Same with an extra pair of boots. If you have the time and money get some field uniforms (These are the ones that aren't pressed or boots that aren't spit shined.) You could just uses your first issue stuff and buy all new stuff after you get to post. But most guys don't have that money then. Short cuts on inspections save you time and headache.

Well, my dad was in the air force. 21 years special ops-and para rescue. He told me stories where you have to get up in the morning at 5am and run miles and miles. Thats in boot camp. But you have to be commitied and never get up., You will serve the army. SO GOOD LUCK
