becoming an officer in the navy. . . need some advice getting confused? I am going in enlisted into the navy, I will be taking the rate of AC. I have about 2 years left to my ba from CUNY. I did two years at the school and am finishing the other two years by correspondence/online, My recruiter said that I go in as enlisted, when I get my BA I apply to OCS and that it is easier than someone with no military background to get in. He also said it won't matter if I transfer to an online school like Thomas Edison State College. I have less than a year to finish up my BA there because of my military training. My first grades at school were very bad but so far i have gotten nothing below an A. I hope to finish with streight A's. She said that i should go for the online degree to apply to be an officer as soon as possible and that it will make no difference. Has anyone gone this route, enlisted then officer, but not spent a long time enlisted? I would like to spend like 4 years enlisted or so then go to OCS if possible while i just settle things down. oh, financially there is no way i can finish my degree, and my dad is very sick so my parents might be needing to move into a smaller home etc. etc. sometimes finishing the degree isn't an option

The first thing I would do is make sure that all of the online school credits will transfer as well as the credits for the school you are going to now. The second thing I would look into is rather you can retake the classes you did poorly in to see if you can replace those grades. When you go into the service enlisted and then go on to become an officer, you are then referred as a maverick and often that comes with extra respect from the enlisted as they see you were once one yourself. Have you looked into ROTC at a college and doing reserves while you do that? I believe your recruiter is correct but you can get ahold of an OCS recruiter through your college and get better scuttlebutt from them. Good luck and Godspeed!

Well the Navy is no different from any other professional organization in that they would rather promote from within, which is why there are far more piplines to go from enlisted to officer than there are to go from civilian to officer. This is certainly not a bad route you are considering, however before you decide to go enlisted, speak with your recruiter and insist she or she put you in contact with the Officer programs folks and look at the Bachelors Degree Completion Program or BDCP. http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/noru/orojt/generalofficer.htm#1 without sitting down with you and doing the interview myself, I do not know if you qualify or not, but you may. Look at this program, if you qualify I would suggest pursuing it. If not, by all means Enlisted to Officer is a very good option. Good Luck
