Optical drives cease to operate at the same time.?

Over past weekend had my internal optical drive & my external optical drive not be recognized by my computer. When you got to device manager both drives are listed with an error message that says something about a windows initialization error. OS=vista. In a bit of a pickle since can't really use a recovery disk. Any ideas? I tried uninstalling both, but that didn't work.
