for the hazordis enviroments the tempeture has an effect on the signal. So if it's snowing say then the signals get slow and scrambled (Which is why the TV shuts off in a storm) and a radio transision signal works better because the infra red can again depending on the temeture stop getting signal. But the radio transmision signal works better because it won't/can't have problems like that. See what I mean?
