Pain from braces hard to eat?

I've had the top row of braces for almost a year now but today I just got the bottom ow done. My orthodontist said that the bottom row will hurt way more and it should make me lose my appetite from the pain but I should try and eat through it so I don't lose weight or make myself sick. After three hours I tried to eat but it hurt so bad I cried. Thr nurse tightened them about 3x what she was supposed to so it isn't supposed to hurt this bad......I know how bad oral pain hurts by now, I had an upper exposure (The oral surgeon put me down cut my gums open in 6 places to put a bracket and a chain on my tooth that was laying sideways and they pulled that tooth down painfully for the next year) but even that didn't hurt like this.....any suggestions?
