Should I have this much pain for a bruise?

On Wednesday night I fell down 12 stairs and only broke a toe. The rest of my foot bruised really bad but nothing really hurt bad (besides the first night) until yesterday after walking around and now the side of my foot hurts a lot and I get shooting pain up my leg sometimes. Could I have done something else to my foot?
I went to the ER the first night and they did Xray up past my ankle to be sure I didn't break anything there too.
