Is there such a psychological condition where someone feels the pain of those

around them? I mean to great extent where someone elses's emotional suffering makes the observer upset; where the one who is suffering is a complete stranger.

As Graham pointed out, it's called being empathetic. The feelings are both a blessing and a curse.
It's good because empathetic people (in my opinion) are nicer, more sensitive people. The bad side, though, is that the feelings can become overwhelming and lead to anxiety.

My first, really powerful episode, occurred in high school. A couple of girls got into a big fight and the weave of one was yanked off her head. The crowd that had gathered burst out laughing, but I had to leave the area and cry because I "felt" her embarrassment and hurt feelings. I had no idea who she was.
To this day I am almost just as in tune with the emotions of other people as I am my own. What I took as "magical" in my youth, I now see to be subconscious observations.
My home was filled with bickering, petty and sometimes violent people and I was always the "peace keeper" so without trying, I became a master at intuiting mood by through observing the body language of others.

I'm sure there's a similar root for all "empaths".

Oh yes.

I cry at sad movies.

It is very common to be affected by other peoples emotions.

Yes, there is. And the condition can be so harmful as to cause hypochondria. Therefore, it's highly advisable for such susceptible people never to allow themselves to be exposed to terminal patients.
