very sore throat...pain is very deep?

i have had a horrible cold for a week now which started out with a sore throat in the usual location. i have been coughing ALOT and have tested neg for strep. both of my ears hurt too but the thing that is the worst right now is this horrible pain deep in my throat...about in the area of the hollow of my neck.i dont know if it is stricktly related to post nasal drip, or if is a cramping of the muscles of my throat( is that possible?).it feels like cramping/constriction, or like something is IN there.
what do you think? and how can i get releif from it? i have been using alot of advil, which helps, but im afraid i have been taking too much.
