What colour to paint cabinets?

I'm looking for some inspiration. I am in the process of redoing most of everything in my condo. The kitchen is next. I've decided to save money and repaint my cabinets as they are in good shape. I'll be redoing everything else, flooring, countertop and appliances. They will be stainless steel. My kitchen is small (6'x12') and part of the living room. Living room style is modern and will have dark hardwood flooring. I'm dying to paint the cabinets black and do light tile on the floor. Would this be asking for trouble? I'm thinking with the dark living room it might either look great or dungeon. My living room is a loft style, so is very bright and open. I recently upgraded the kitchen lighting so it's very brightly lit.
