How to get lettering crisp? Painting on a sign?

I painted some letters on a sign, the letters were straight but the edges look like it was painted by someone with palsy. I painted a shadow and it looked a little better.

I was using the economy brush from wal-mart, if I go buy a set of expensive brushes will that help get the edges of the letters more crisp?
