Can canvas tarps be painted with an exterior paint that will make them last...

...longer outdoors? Which paint? Tks
I have the same question for plastic tarps, and poly sheeting, can they be painted to increase their durability? What paint would be best? Thanks, we go through many of these each year and it seems such a waste.
