Raku Painting on Clay Sculptures Adivce?

in my art class we are rakuing all kinds of clay peices.
i'm not the one who handles the actulal fireing of the peices but I do paint my peices myself.
any neat tips or tricks for me to try?
from my experience so far, all the colors turn our pretty blurred and blunt. there isn't really any definition in the colors...
