Can cinder blocks be painted?

I am using cinder blocks for planter borders. In the holes I am planting marigolds to keep out the critters. I would like to be able to paint the cinder blocks so they aren't the drabby grey. If they can be painted, what type of paint.....
i.e. spray, oil, water, tempra(I think I misspelled this one)
I want to thank you guys for your responses.
While doing more research, I found exactly what I was looking for! I couldn't have done it without your answers though to get the ball moving.
