u know how they make one painting on more than one canvas and then hang them on the wall separately with little space amongst each...

A montage, piece in multiple parts, grid installation, panels,

or a title borrowed from pattern making: tiling.

yeah I know what your talking about like everyone gets there own 'puzzle piece" to make...I did this in college but I cant remember the name either.................

A painting with two panels is called a diptych. One with three panels is called a triptych. One with four or more panels is called a polyptych. Check out the link below for more on these.
