Has anyone ever stained or painted fiberon composite decking?

I replaced my decking with grey fiberon (composite boards) about 6 years ago but did not replace the railings or steps. I wanted to stain the boards or paint them so they would match the wood colored railings a bit more. Can the composite boards be stained or painted? I asked the company and they said that they could but they wouldn't suggest it because it would add more work to their product. I don't know if that is just their business jargon keeping to the "maintance free" products or does something happen to the boards if they are stained.
