What is the best way to paint a horizontal panel fence?

Did mine last summer - very dark brown and other side was light. Had to do it with a brush.

I would suggest you get together with your neighbor and decide on a single color. Who owns the fence? Even though a fence divides the property and is "on the property line" usually it is more one one side than the other. Unless it is in the title of your property that the fence is commonly owned it usually has only one owner. The owner gets to decide on the color, (and is also responsible for ALL the painting etc. I know that in the country in the State of Wisconsin for example ownership of the fence is decided by the direction of the fence. North and East are owned by one farmer and West and South by another, (the direction that the field the farmers owns from the fence). There is actually a "fencer" appointed by Townships to settle fence disputes.

good luck with that one it happened to my neighbour when my hubby painted with a brush and she was talking to my daughter, who was 2 at the time, and said i had done it and i had done it on purpose, but she did not see me standing there listening, then again she was a bit of a fruit-loop, so as i say good luck we now have the same colour as the new neighbours.

I'd be careful if using an airless sprayer; there may not be too much over spray, but what there is could cause problems outside. If the area is not too big I'd use the biggest roller possible and then back brush. It may even be as quick as spraying, if you take into account the set up/clean time of using an airless.

I'd use a 'horizontal paintbrush' especially designed for panel fences! ;-)

do your self a favor. try to agree on a mutual color with your neighbor.any other way just wont look rite. believe me. and its a good neighbor policy. and a good ice breaker if you dont know your neighbor. be smart. good luck.

You need to know who ownes the fence first. The support posts are usually on the side of the person who owns the fence. If you own the fence I suggest you paint [with a brush- a sprayer will go through the slats and affect your neighbours plants] your side and the top and underside of each slat, plus the 3 visible sides of the support post and top of it too. [ Then possibly your neighbour will paint his side green also. ]However , if the fence is not yours. You should only paint the sides of the slats facing your garden. Having said that it won't look bad, as the rest will look as if it is shade and light anyway. I personnally think all fences should be green as it melts into the background and is not so obvious as that hideous orangey brown people seem to paint them. AND green shows off your plants better too.
