Is it safe to paint a 6 month baby's nails?

My daughter is 6 months. I want to paint her nails for something special coming up - Is this safe? She does have her hands in her mouth all of the time - can this hurt her? Have you ever painted a baby's nails that was that little - or know of anyone that has??
Just for the record... I think piercing a baby's ears is really crazy. I don't believe it is right until they tell you they want it.

And I am not trying to make my baby look like a "whore" - I thought it would be cute. I would never paint them bright red or anything like that - she is getting Christened and I was going to paint them a pearl color.
And yes - she is FOR SURE already cute enough - but I too thought it would be fun...
