what paint colors are good to make a room look bigger and brighter?

I'm having trouble figuring out what color to paint my bedroom. my bedspread has small polkadots of all different colors on a white backround, and i have a rug to match. my furniture is white, and my carpet is a creamish color. my room is small and doesn't get much light. what colors are cool but really useful in this case?
