I want to paint my cabinets, how can I tell if they're Melamine or Laminate?

I want to paint my cabinets, how can I tell if they're Melamine or Laminate?

From my research I've found that I can paint melamine but I can not paint laminate cabinets. How can I tell the difference? I have cream colored cabinet fronts with wood stripes at the bottom of each drawer & tops of each cabinet. There is also wood (not real wood really) on the cabinets themselves. They are from 1988.

I really need a new look for this kitchen.. help!
