can I turn a finished dark wood coffee table(already finished)and paint it...

...black and it still look good? I am moving out of an apartment with a roommate and into a one bedroom, but the problem with this is I am a little tight on cash, (I cant just run out and buy all new stylish living room furniture and decor). So I was thinking about what I had to work with, and my boyfriend has this pretty good size dark wood coffee table. The coffee table part is great but most of my forniture is Black&Silver.I am completely clueless and inexperienced at how to Refinish a finished wood coffee table and make it look good and not chip. If anyone could give me some tips or a detailed process on how to do it that would make my day(and my living room)Please!?

Use a primer on it first before painting it black. A gallon of black is best because you should put at least 2-3 coats of paint. Can also have the primer tinted so you are not painting on white primer.

What is wrong with a wood accent piece? If it looks good, consider it eclectic styling.

To get paint to stick, you would have to strip off the varnish that is on the table now. You can buy a liquid stripper at a paint store. Then sand the surfaces smooth with fine sandpaper.
Then paint the table with a dark colored oil base primer. Then sand again with fine paper.
Then paint with black oil base enamel. Sand again, paint again.
Or you can go to Ikea and get a black table for the cost of the supplies you would otherwise need.

Sell it and replace it. Sell everything you can and then buy a few good pieces.

Use a deglosser available at all hardware stores. This prepares the surface so paint will adhere.

Dual coat it with the correct painting motion and nothing should go wrong.

^_^

Go to woodworking sites on how to repaint and varnish.
