I have painted my kitchen cabintets black, and I find the kitchen too

dark.Should I paint the lower brown? I have a pantry (also black) and the island is black too! I have yet to paint the counter top,but the island is light brown butcher block....white floors and ceiling.

Repaint your upper cabinets in the same white as your floors (whee lots of priming). Paint the pantry too if it's fairly large and overwhelming. It'll reflect more light and won't "close in" on you the way black does. While the lower cabinets will still be a little dominating, it's the eye-level ones that can really drown a room.

Another option is to paint all the doors that light brown tone to lighten it up, but that really depends on the style of your kitchen.

Black kitchen cabinets is a very modern look. You do need to have a contrasting color to balance the room. Example; light counter tops, light floors and light color on the wall to compliment the black cabinets. Also light is key and crucial. Recess lighting is great and provides plenty of light without being in the way. Remember completing the room will give you a better perspective. You are half way there. Good luck!

I would keep the bottom black and put a white trim on the top.

It all depends. Do you have a natural source of light in the room. Dark colors will make the room appear smaller. If the kitchen is small, adding an additional color may compound your issue.
