I need help how would i go about painting tye-dye with acrylics??? =/?

I'm doing an art honors project about john lennon and i want to paint the canvas tye-dye but i'm not too sure how to go about this. i don't want to mess it up so how should i do it? which colors should i use? red, yellow, blue and just mix them or should i add pink, orange, green, and purple? please help meeee
