i am looking to get some paint work done for a car?

got an early 70s model volkswagon bug and would like to restore it (to drive not for show) not a lot of work involved but it will take a year or so as my pet project......i want to make it fun and have a huge peace symbol painted on the hood and psychadelic flowers painted on it everywhere else...the car is white and i would like the bright colors for contrast....what kinds of places should i be looking at for custom free-hand paint like this?....also any other ideas for custom paint on this car?

you could take your car to a custom painter but it would cost you a lot of money. in the papers or no creigslist find an individual painter (mexicans do an awesome painting job) and pay them like 200 bucks and they will do an amazing painting job on your car.
you might wanna be careful cuz u dont wanna loss the main theme color of your car. if your cars papers says your car is blue then you have to have alteast 50% blue as the main theme of your car. if you get the whole color changed then no insurance company would cover any damage.

Check out some local custom cycle shops that do custom paint work or murals...lots of creativity there. Also, ask some local auto paint supply stores for references...talk to the outside sales reps. Autobodyonline.com is a great source for info on the trade and has a shop finder feature. Check out some online pics of 70's era custom cars, flower power or VW clubs/message boards. I've known a few painters from years ago that did awesome murals and such....the 70's were so cool!! Had a 69 Charger RT back then.

wow. "Mexicans do great paint work".,... unbelievable.

I would recommend attending a couple of local car shows. check out cars that have high quality paint and ask them where they had it done. Most will tell you the good and bad places to go.

You will be looking typically at smaller shops that specialize in custom work. Typically larger paint and body shops specialize in collision repair or "production" work. They want fast turnaround so that they can make good volume. The type of work you are describing would be more in line with a craftsman who would take longer, but produce better results - and usually charge more for those results.
