Is it safe to use plasti-kote to paint the wire on my rat cage?

Hi.
I've made my own DIY rat cage and my next job is to attach wire to the doors. I've been looking everywhere for powder-coated or pvc coated wire (since the normal, non-coated variety can be toxic to rats) but I haven't been able to find any ANYWHERE. I've decided to take matters into my own hands and buy the normal, non-coated wire, and paint it with plasti-kote. I was just wondering, is it safe to use this paint? Or is that toxic too? If it is unsafe, does anyone have any alternative suggestions to a non-toxic paint I could use to coat the wire?
Please can someone help me as i'm getting rats at the end of next week and I really need their home to be finished ASAP.
I'd be very grateful.
