Spray painting an air filter... decreases its filtering power?

I guess Im asking the obvious, but I am spraying bronzing sunless tanner on clients and using a box fan as an exhaust fan to clear away the overspray.

To minimize the changing out of the filters everytime I spray (because it gets the filter dirty with the bronze color), a friend suggested I spray paint the filter black.

?

Does it not seem like the paint may create a uniform coat on whice air can not pass?
