I am planning on painting old aluminum siding, is it hard? Good Idea??

I have just bought a foreclosed property in my area. There are a few strips of siding missing toward the bottom of the home and the color is all faded really bad. My plan is to paint the siding and put up that fake stone siding stuff (don't know the real name) from the bottom to about 3-4 ft up to take care of the missing pieces of siding. does this sound like a good idea? I think it will look nice and it won't be expensive as replacing with all vinyl siding.
Also, I live in Northwest Indiana. Is it a good idea to paint in the spring with temps around 60 degrees, or wait til summer?
