Can you make a living in Performing Arts?

I've been talking with my mom, and she knows I love the stage. I told her earlier maybe I want to pursue Culinary Arts, but now I know for sure I want to be an actor. When I told her this, she got off on me about how I should be prepared to live the poor life, and not have money, and that I'm going to be living in the slums.

I've seen the bohemians life in movies such as Rent, but seriously, how hard would you have to work as an actor or an actress to be paid good money for what you do? Are all actors really that poor?
