Theatre Degree? So, I am looking into a career of theatre and I want to know what kind of degree I would get. Would it be in performing arts? Drama? Theatre Performance? Or visual and performing arts? I'm so confused! Please help!To be specific I want to be on stage, like, Broadway.

Theatre Degree? If you want to be a stage actor then I recommend a good university acting program such as Julliard, SUNY Purchase, Rutgars or UNC Greensborogh. YOu will need to be very very good and pass auditions, have great grades and a lot of money, they are not cheap.

Theatre Degree? Your question is vague. You did not indicate your age (high school? collegian? older person seeking a new career path?), or what kind of schooling you are considering (standard college/university? dramatic arts school? tech school?), or even where you intend on studying (USA? Overseas?), not to mention how much you can afford. As far as I'm aware, there is no college/university program that offers a specialized, theater-based degree. In other words, all you can get is a Bachelor (and higher) of Arts degree with a major in Theater, at least in the USA.And, as far as your wanting to tread the boards, I'm afraid no degree will help you, except MAYBE to get an ever-so-slightly better advantage in getting an audition (needless to say, it's your looks and talent that will get the job, not the sheepskin). In that regard, virtually any degree is adequate, and, quite frankly, many people who audition are high school drop-outs who think they are going to reach stardom overnight. It doesn't happen, even with the help of an agent. As such, you might want to consider working behind the scenes; the pay is less, and is not as glamorous, but it can be very rewarding to the soul, if not the pocket. You'd be far better off seeking the advice of your parents and school guidance counselors.

Theatre Degree? While it's still no guarentee that you'll be able to make a living working as a theatre actor, getting a degree in acting would be a step in the right direction. Theatre Doc already listed some great programs for you to look into (I'm a SUNY Purchase alum- though not an actor- so I'll admit that I'm a bit biased toward that one). Look for programs that lead to a BFA in acting (the top programs that do that are dominated by intensive training in acting, but also include a substantial academic background that covers a great deal of theatre and performance history and theory as wells as some general liberal arts/sciences material).
