all the subjects that we learn science maths have the roots in philosophy. so indirectly we are siting in front of our computers due to philosophy. the vehicle we use to travel it is also made because of advancement in science and technology and it has its origin in philosophy. so it is not a waste of time and it really makes sense.

Well you got to keep your mind moving somtimes because somttimes you mind is the last thing you have. Its also enjoyable to have a time to think with yourself. philosophy is the misteries we may never find out but to me its just as important as an education becasue we need to wonder. Otherwize we arnt the seekers god wanted us to be.

I think the people who spend a lot of time considering philosophy are the ones who enjoy it. So it doesn't really keep them away from the things they like, but the opposite.

Whether or not contemplation is superior to more tangibly enjoyable activities is a matter of debate though. I'd say start with john stuart mill and go from there. Even whether doing the things you like at all can be a matter of debate. It might conflict with a kantian imperative or just a lesser calling than that a greek philosopher could suggest.

I talk about philosophy because I enjoy it and it helps me understand myself.

If it's in your philosophy to do things you would rather not do, rather than doing the things you would rather do ...!

Of course not! Philosophy is what you do so that can work out what it is you really feel it is necessary, important and fun to do. When you've done enough of it, you've earned a break! ;-)

Listen, go sit on the beach while you ponder those deep and meaningful questions - that way you can combine some of the rewards with some of the work. That's my philosophy ...
