Is the art of philosophy more fashionable nowadays than understanding what you philosophise on?

... or is that just my imagination?I've been thinking about this question since yesterday when myself and the boyfriend went out to a restaurant for dinner, and behind my boyfriend was a shower of older people, one of them very loud and curious as I was, I listened in on the conversation (they were largely philosophising on the human psyche). I then told my boyfriend that I thought the man simply wanted to be heard, no matter what he was saying; that he needed to feel as if he was intellectually superior. When we left, my boyfriend and the man ended up in the toilets next to each other and right enough the man continued to share his intellect with him; a complete stranger to him.Anyway, I feel as if people simply want to be heard more than that they actually want to understand the subject. Maybe it's just my imagination. I love to philosophise myself, but usually stick to subjects that I have at least some knowledge of.Good point, hsu_mi, but it was only an example. There are many other times when the only response to what I heard passed as "philosophising" was simple frowning...I know my mind often makes the strangest leaps, and usually even I don't know where I end up when I start philosophising so maybe I should look at myself first.I think I'll put it to the test tonight, in the local bar; see just how willing people are to philosophise and emphasise on their ideas of something and why.

Seems to have been since Hesse, Koestler et. al. Go right back to Plato, Democritas, Epicuras etc. Same old shit, but now we try to make it have a different smell : -?

I believe participating in a philosophical discussion provides opportunity for us to examine, how we are expected to represent the socio/cultural rhetoric and what sanctions are in place that encourage the member to "follow" the leader.

Some people believe strongly in their beliefs and some just love to hear the sound of their voices. There are different types of personalities on this earth as we know from Astrology. This man (probably) is not shy and can talk to strangers (even in the bathroom) with ease. This is a quality that most politicians have naturally. Some call it charisma, others call it "art of philosophizing" and a few call it "just full of themselves", LOL!So, I think it's more of your imagination...the fact that you picked this particular guy out of the crowd. I'm sure there are many others just like you and many other like him and lots of others in between. How's that for philosophizing?

Don't know, I don't follow fashon, but I know what you mean, some people like to hear their own voice to much, perhaps more time thinking and less talking would be a better path for want to be philosophy student. It is not like they can say anything that hasn't been said a million times and rarely the are thoughts unique either.

Philosophy is not A art it is a thought process for a Being toLive or express ones thought as or to live life as. Religion is a philosophy that uses Fear and retribution or the religions god to control the masses and the the governmentthat controls it IE ( THE Catholic religion) Rome controls, the Christan beliefs are controlled by the Right Wing,ETC. My philosophy that is bore from Blind Faith and Meditation is knowledge and having a open mind. The more You can understand and accept as a possibilityof Being able to Be A concept of being is the the best way to deal with what we are going through as a Human right now. the bottom line is the more the persons mind is to OPENor to accept the Explained or the unexplainable the easierlife is to accept as it happens and to accept what is coming at it!!!!!!
