| Aren't modernist materialist philosophies (eg, Evolutionism) just a holdover
from the 19th century? Evolutionism has EVERYTHING to do with philosophy - that being philosophical materialism. Cern: "There is no such thing as evolutionism." There is now - that's the beuaty of the English language, it's so flexible! http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=evolutionism&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8 Gary - you are at a disadvantage here, because you do not understand the term. Look up philosophical materialism, or naturlistic materialism. Good luck. SAcott - you are mistaken on that. Evolution has EVERYTHING to do with philosophy.

What does biology have to do with materialism? If you replaced "Evolutionism" with "Christianity" or "Republicanism", your question at least would make sense. ==== edit -- “Evolutionism” (or Evolution, for that matter) is not a philosophy, epistemology, or belief system. However, if you mean something that stands in opposition to metaphysical naturalism (which is anti-science and denies the possibility of objective human knowledge), then, sure, the modern scientific revolution of the 19th century qualifies. ===== edit-- Evolution is both a scientific fact (e.g. the fossil record) and scientific theory. The scientific theory of evolution is the most power general explanatory model in all of science. It is the biological equivalent the unifying theory sought by physicists. Without it, biology—and, in fact, every life science collapses. For example, without evolution as its basis, modern medical science is nothing more than the Voodoo mumbo-jumbo practiced by Witch Doctors. In any case, other than being the legitimate product of the application of the philosophy of science, the scientific method, and an epistemology that believes in the existence of objective human knowledge—evolution has NOTHING to do with philosophy. |

And the scientific method is a holdover from evidence-based investigation, as proposed by Francis Bacon in the 16th century. The Hippocratic Oath and medicine is a holdover from the 4th century BC. What's your point? |

Congratulations. You just made up a word. There is no such thing as evolutionism. Edit: lol, your link to the a search for the term evolutionism turned up this at number 3 or 4. "In the creation-evolution controversy, those who accept the scientific theory of biological evolution by natural selection or genetic drift are often called "evolutionists", and the theory of evolution itself is referred to as "evolutionism" by creationists. This label is used by creationists to suggest that evolution is similar to other "isms", such as Creationism, Evangelism, Judaism, Socialism, Communism, Capitalism, Nationalism, Catholicism. In this way, creationists bolster their claim that the scientific theory of evolution is a belief, dogma, ideology or even a religion, rather than a scientific theory. The terms "evolutionism" and "evolutionist" are rarely used in the scientific community as self-descriptive terms. "Evolutionism", is defined by the OED as "[t]he theory of evolution, evolutionary assumptions or principles". Creationists tend to use the term evolutionism in a misleading sense in order to suggest that evolution and creationism are equal in a philosophical debate." |

Shall we make it post modern by looking at the evolution of God? God in a pantheon of a desert tribe, God as a father figure in the pantheon, God in a henoistic culture, finally God as sole tribal God, God as a monotheist world class god, but strangely split in 3. No longer a modernist biological theory but still fun. |

Evolution has nothing to do with philosophy, it has everything to do with evidence. You see, a theory is not a "wild guess" or a "speculation we are not sure about". In science, a theory is as good as it gets and is always subject to change pending new evidence. The ToE is a theory that has withstood the testing of 150 years of rigorous investigation. There is no such thing as "Evolutionism". You are making up a term that does not exist--typical for Creationists. Evolution is the process by which life forms change over time vis mutation and natural selection. Period. It says nothing about morality, God, the universe, spirituality, or anything else. |
