how to promote philosophy to non philo majors? like me, im an industrial designer how would i have some interest in studying philosophy...what words or important topics that i can include from philosophy to designing

Everyone has a philosophy. Even stating you don't have a philosophy is a philosophical position. I recommend two books for you that will provide many reasons why an industrial designer would need a philosophy and the topics that can be applied to your profession. The Romantic Manifesto (1969) Ayn Rand's philosophy of art, with a new analysis of the Romantic school of literature. Essays include: "Philosophy and Sense of Life," "The Psycho-Epistemology of Art," and "What is Romanticism?" ______________________ The Fountainhead (1943) The story of an innovator—architect Howard Roark—and his battle against the tradition-worshipping establishment. Its theme: "individualism versus collectivism, not in politics, but in man's soul; the psychological motivations and the basic premises that produce the character of an individualist or a collectivist." Ayn Rand presented here for the first time her projection of the ideal man. Roark's independence, self-esteem, and integrity have inspired millions of readers for more than half a century.

I tell people that it teaches you to think logically and order your thoughts. One of the things it teaches you to distinguish between is instrumental vs intrinsic value. People often only think about instrumental value, and forget that things can be valuable in themselves. Aesthetics, modernism and postmodernism might be useful to designing (instrumental value), but the main thing is that it's enjoyable and fulfilling: for some people, it has intrinsic value. Another thing it teaches you is how not to get taken for a ride by politicians, lawyers, estate agents, the media, etc. You learn to recognise bad argument tactics that can be very persuasive if you don't spot them. For example, it's easy to understand that this is a bad argument: 1. All cows have four legs. 2. All tables have four legs. Therefore, cows are tables. But if it's not talking about cows and tables but something complicated and political, it's easy to be taken in by it. EDIT: I'm not sure about using 'philosophy' to describe any perspective at all. In that case I might as well say that my philosophy is to sit on the couch and eat marshmallows. The word means 'love of wisdom- you might go about it in different ways, but you have to actually be seeking wisdom, or it's not philosophy.
