Why is some skepticism healthy in today’s world of commercialism and mass media?

The mass media is a business, and like a business it needs to survive in a "dog eat dog world" that is highly competitive and very erratic.

Mass media makes its money by selling their product and by selling their audiences. Mass media in essence sells you when they produce an article in a newspaper. They know that if they have something that is newsworthy you will buy their product and then they have in essence sold you to their advertisers because you will be reading the advertising along with the article.

If there is nothing to put in the newspapers then they will lose money so often news is made to be something more than what it is to generate public interest. So yes sometimes you are being fed exagerated lies only to sell you to advertising!

Be skeptical of everything you read, and then make your own judgement call with the information you have been provided! In philosophical terms it means that you should never take anything as a final truth

World's commercialism and mass media ARE Skepticism:
Loss of values. Nothing is true, right or forbidden.
There is no content that can be communicated.
And everyone has it's own truth.

Sometimes, the fortune fairy taps us on the shoulder with her wand and everything starts to go our way. Sometimes, she just brushes briefly past our door, depositing a package as she goes. Her deliveries are often odd. They rarely contain the name of the sender. Often, indeed, they are parcelled up as problems. Even if we can see through this disguise, we tend to discover, as we unwrap, that we have been given a kit for self-assembly. You now have to do a little figuring. But you still have a lot to be glad of.
