Maybe not the beginning of all knowledge, but the beginning of knowledge of ignorance. The more you know, the more you know you don't know, it seems. Although, it may also bring knowledge of oneself. A person's philosphophies may well allow that person to realise what sort of person they are, where tehy may not otherwise know of their uniqueness. |

I don't think philosophy is the end of all knowledge because it is the quest for truth, ie a journey not a destination. We are finite beings and however gifted in our own estimation there must be some knowledge, maybe a lot, that we will never find, some truths that are simply beyond us - now and in the future. For the scientifically inclined, in the 20th century alone three limits were discovered that severely limited what we can know about some very important mathematical and physical systems ie Godel's incompleteness theorem, the uncertainty principle and chaotic sensitivity. For philosophy the stakes are even higher - truths not about numbers and particles but about life, the human condition, ethics, knowledge, etc.I think we should adopt the attitude of an ancient philosopher who said "Wisest is he who knows he does not know".That is the sensible, even rational position to take in the face of (possibly) Absolute Truth or Infinite Knowledge. We should travel in hope and enjoy the quest, always having more to learn and discover. What would we do if we reached the end, perhaps a dead end? And it would be the death of hope really for we would know that there is a limit and an end to truth, wisdom and knowledge, etc and nothing more for us to do.So no, I don't believe philosophy is the end of all knowledge. |

my favorite: "The point of philosophy is to start with something so simple as to seem not worth stating, and to end with something so paradoxical that no one will believe it." – Bertrand Russell, (From The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, Lecture II) The answer is in asked question! |
