| philosophy questions from Plato's account of Socrates's last days?
Explain how Socrates refutes Euthyphro's argument that the pious is what is beloved of the gods. Explain the Affinity Argument and state how Simmias' objection (i.e., that the soul is a harmony) is an objection to it. In his fourth argument for the immortality of the soul, Socrates attempts to prove the immortality of the soul by claiming that there are two primary ways in which a thing can participate in a form, contingently or necessarily. Socrates claims that Soul necessarily participates in Life and therefore cannot admit of death. Explain, through the use of examples, these two ways in which a thing can participate in a form. Aristotle claims that universals are real (i.e., not merely subjective ideas) but not separable from matter and not existing in some independent non-material realm like Plato's Heaven. How, then, does he claim that one can come to know the common element in all men (and hence have the universal idea 'man') |
