what is the relationship between Music and Philosophy?

Toscanini said in reference to the first movement of the Eroica: "To some it is Napoleon, to some it is a philosophical struggle. To me it is allegro con brio."

when we play and listen to music we often look for a deeper meaning. We often talk about this deeper meaning in philosophical terms that have a hard time fitting the medium of music, or quickly become so abstract that the meaning becomes elusive.

Or is Toscanini onto to something when he implies that the philosophical searcher is looking for something that isn't there?
Or is something else entirely going on?
