If you study philosophy in college, you're going to have to learn about the great historical philosophers, and you'll have to learn about contemporary philosophers too.

With any discipline--from plumbing to brain surgery to philosophy--there's no way you can excel without studying the the masters of that discipline.

Having studied the works of such people, you'll find that you can formulate your own views more clearly and creatively.

Chances are, you'll be expected not only to have your own views, but to defend them with reasoned arguments.
