Revolutionary has a spectacular aura about
Leo Tolstoy, in Anna Karenina, said that philosophy was basically about the study of how a person should live...and that person's relation to society at large (or something to that nature).

And while some questions of philosophy don't concern themselves with such things, the more momentous questions do.

Basically, what is justice? How should we then live? How should a just socieity be constructed? And the such are the core concerns of philosophy.

But if you want the very best definition of philosophy I have ever read, then read Bertrand Russell's introduction to "A History of Western Philosophy." He points out that philosophy is the study of those things that are beyond science. While theology tells us to believe by faith certain things about these issues, philosophy seeks to construct a logical, reasonable reason to believe this or that way in these areas which are beyond the scope of science.
