You need a tripod. And you should use the cable release. It looks like this (each camera needs a particular one) http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=3995159&JRSource= yahoo.datafeed.CAN+RS60E3 Put it in MANUAL mode. A few seconds for exposure. I assume you're using a DSLR--thank goodness "film" is cheap.

If you're going for longer exposures, use a small aperture so you don't overexpose. Shoot in dim light. Nighttime outside or in a dark room inside would be great! For the best effects, have the person doing the light writing dressed in black.

If your camera has a "RAW" mode, that makes for wonderful photos in low light situations. Photoshop CS recomends "RAW" mode for night photography, and I've tried it, and it made a huge differance. I recomend a digital camera just so that you not only have a light meter, but a screen so you can see how adjusting the Apperture really does affect the low light photos. I personally wouldn't say a wide apperture is always good, but alot of the time, yes it is.
