I want to buy a digital SLR, mainly for sport photography.?

My 9 yr old son plays baseball and soccer, and I want to be able to take action shots of him. My total budget is about $600 w/lenses etc. Any particular brands better than others? I had a Canon SLR (film) for many years. I really need to know what zoom lens will be sufficient for this. When he's on the field, I want to be able to take waist up shots or slightly better. (I don't need to be able to zoom in on just his ear or something) Obviously, the standard lens won't cut it.
Any ideas?

Thanks

$600 will get you the camera but not the lens.

You'll need a 70-300 and that'll run you anouther $300 used.

Stick with Canon or Nikon.

With that budget, the best thing would be to get the Canon Rebel XT body (about $400)

and the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens (about $200).
