Any reccomendations on getting a jumpstart on learning the art of photography?

If there is anyone who is a professional photographer and has some advice on what books to read or what software to buy, i would greatly appreciate it.

First of all, don't get hung up on buying equipment - you can take great photos with just about any camera.

Learn the basics of focus, depth-of-field, shutter speed, and aperture. Photography is all about controlling light.

Read everything you can find on composition - this will go a long way in improving your photos.

If you are going to be doing flash photography, buy a camera that will accept an external flash and then buy the best flash you can get. (Remember, photography is all about light). You will be better off with an inexpensive DSLR and a really good flash than the reverse of that. Expect to spend about $300 on a flash.

I'm not a professional but i'm more than an amateur. The best way to learn is to buy a digital camera SLR or point and shoot that provides you the ability to turn off "auto" and take some manual control, then go out and shoot. It's usually better to see for yourself what the different settings do. I'd also suggest checking continuing ed or tech schools in your area for beginning photography courses. I know Ritz aka Wolf cameras also offers them as well as many online schools. I'd also suggest joining some of the MSN Photography groups it's free you just need a hotmail username and password. Here's a group I belong to that's really good http://groups.msn.com/PHOTOGRAPHYLOVERSUNITE

hope to see you there!
