Good camera for college level photography classes?

I will probably be buying a used one. If you know anything about what I should look for in a good 35mm OR digital camera (not regular everyday use ones). any tips are helpful. What features should I be looking for, such as dimensions, shutter speeds, reasonable prices for a decent used one, etc? I have used cameras before that belonged to my school but now that I am buying my own I'm not sure about exactly what to look for. Any info is appreciated.
