Always wanted to take up photography as a hobby?

I usually take pictures with my digital camera and camera on my phone. I love taking pictures and looking at abstract photography... I think it is so cool and something I want to begin doing for myself.

My question really is... what type of camera do I need? I have looked around and have only seen those $700 cameras that you need etc etc.

I'm a student so $700 for a camera is unaffordable. Can anyone recommend something that I can use and won't strain my budget either?
