1ds mark 3 or 5D or D3, go full frame the wider the better for studio work......

Lenses like the 10-22mm, the F1.2 50mm, the 28-105mm also. A F1.2 85mm L would be good also.

EDIT: what about lights and backgrounds et cetera?

You would never use a large format camera for shooting people in today's studio. All of the people pro photographer I know use a high end DSLR camera. One studio shooter I know used the digital Hassleblatt which is great but you also out of about $30 000 +. It all depends what kind of budget you have set aside for your studio set up. If money is tide choose the Canon or Nikon DSLR you can afford and spend the money on good lenses. You can always upgrade to a higher end body later. The lenses are good for later models. I used a Canon D5 and have been very happy with that camera so far. Canons pro service is also great. The Canon Marks are great but heavy if you like to handhold your camera. In my area the pro film labs are almost all closed so film would not be my choice at this time in the game.

While full frame DSLR's are the optimal camera for studio work, shooting head shots is often done using the APS-C DSLR.

I shoot thousands of images a month using a Nikon D200 with a 24-85mm f/2.8 lens. About 90% of the time I use incendescent lighting (Lowel Tota-lights with umbrella's) which are very portable.

For your consideration:

You can find camera's with a 18-55mm lens (fine for what you are doing) for under $500.
