Forensic photographers are usually peace officers first and then work their way into the crime lab based upon their education, skill sets and their success as an officer of the law. It may have be that some small jurisdictions hire contractors, but they have to know a lot about rules of evidence, chain of custody and evidence. I know that were I used to live the forensic folks came from the rank and file after five to ten years working in the field. Knowledge of any scientific photography techniques (like shooting IR film, UV film as well as being skilled at documenting evidence at crime scenes, in the lab and be good on the stand explaining to juries and the court the processes and safeguards used to protect the photographic evidence. |
