The photos you put online are low resolution, as low as 72ppi. A watermark doesn't hurt, but since every kid on the Web has Photoshop they can remove it. Just don't put high resolution pictures up, and expect kids to rip off anything they want.
The best way to watermark is to create your watermark and save it as a brush. Then you only make it once and it's always there to use.

Watermark your pictures. It is advisable if you have a photography business to have Photoshop anyways. So get Photoshop if you don't already. Then use the Text tool, write your signature and date in very big letters. Yes, it looks really ugly right now but don't worry. In the Layers window, set your Text layer to 0% Fill (on the right side of the layers window). Then right-click on the Text Layer's name in the Layers window. Select Blending options. Go to Drop Shadow. Set the Blend Mode to Normal, Distance to 0, and the opacity to however low/high you want. If you have a dark picture, you can change the color to White. This is a very convenient technique because you can still see the photo but it can't be stolen. ALWAYS save two versions of the photo-- a watermarked one, and a nonwatermarked one. Just uploaded the watermarked ones. Then the nonwatermarked ones can be bought as prints or whatever if people like the photo enough

As for when a customer gets the print, I'm not too sure. Try getting your pictures legally protected. I'm not very experienced with that kind of thing though, sorry. Good luck!

You can include waterprints to your picture; so that it can't be scanned, printed or copied from a machine.

Also, to display them online, you can use a service like: Smugmug (http://www.photo-print-reviews.com/goto/smugmug.php ) - where you can upload your pictures and convert them into watermarked-flash objects. This way, you can ensure that nobody copies your work.
