Land topography, air temperature, air mass all can have an affect on wind characteristics. A plane doesn't fall out of the sky due to a difference in pressure above and below the wings. Lower pressure above the wings allow higher pressure beneath them to "push" the plane up. The engines are necessary to provide the momentum to allow a sufficient amount of air to flow over the wings depending upon the weight and design of the aircraft.

Wind does not flow smoothly, some is up or down, gusts are turbulent air flows.

also nicknamed AIR BUMPS. These occur when the aircraft is flying over a certain type of pressure and a pocket of a different pressure goes over the wings which causes the aircraft 2 shake.
