english help....... poetry. easy ten points!? your fathers gone, my bald headmaster said. his shiny dome and brown tobacco jar splinterd at once in tears. it wasnt grief. i cried for knowledge which was bitterer. when he says "his shiny dome and brown tobacco jar." is there some symbolism there, or is he just describing the headmasters head (dome?) and whats on his desk (tobacco jar.) .....i just dont understand why he would put that line in when in the rest of the poem he hasnt described the setting really at all . any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated thanx

Well the shiny dome is the bald head I'm sure. Metaphorical language. The brown tobacco jar....hmmm....it can't splinter in tears...I"m guessing it's maybe his eyes? Brown eyes? Sorry that's just at the top of my head

I have no knowledge of the poem to which you are referring so my responses are generalised. It is beyond a child's experience to understand the loss of a father so he clings to the known reliabilities before him;in the headmaster's office' his headmaster's bald head and his tobacco jar. He probably knows them from past experience in the office on other occasions. They are unchangeable facts for him ;so he clings to them to avoid accepting the terrible news that his father is gone. It may seem odd, but it has been my experience that in moments of deep stress we sometimes notice inconsequentialities. I think it may be a momentary defence mechanism.

I think that they are the two things in the room that caught the speaker's attention. The guy's shiny bald head and the shiny (implied) tobacco jar maybe both reflected light, so, when the person started to cry, the light reflecting off them was broken up (refracted) by the teardrops. Hope this helps
