Poetry help?

For my English class, we have to analyze poetic devices within a song. I am doing "American Pie" by Don McLean. We can use things like sound devices (alliteration, assonance), figurative language (similes, metaphors), symbolism, personification, ect. The assignment isn't that difficult, but I do have a question.

I understand what allusions are, and I understand what symbolism is. In this song, however, I am getting confused. One website says the song is alluding to Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan and other people, but others say McLean was using symbolism. Are they both right? Are neither right? This is making my head spin.

I would really appreciate your help!

Yes, McLean alludes to many Musicial and Political entities. He hinted by way of symbolism.
