Yes, I do think there are similarities, namely, the recurring theme of self-identification ("Negro Speaks of Rivers" and "Song of Myself"). Both are also incredibly good at describing everyday life. I don't know how much Whitman Hughes read, but Whitman was fairly widely published when Hughes was writing.
